The illegal and cruel world of organized Dogfighting

As you read this, two dogs are being forced into a ring to fight for their lives, all for the enjoyment and profit of evil men.

Dogfighting is one of the most grotesque forms of cruelty to animals. Dogs used for fighting are typically raised in isolation, so they spend most of their lives on short, heavy chains, beaten by their owners and then forced to fight other vulnerable dogs to the death.

Considering the cruel death which many dogs meet through this wicked sport, we welcome the government’s new law to help protect animals from cruelty and abuse.
The toughest jail sentences would be for dog fighting and hurting puppies.

The new Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill would mean that people who hurt animals could face up to five years in jail, instead of the current six months. But man’s best friend still faces many challenges. Every dog deserves a chance to thrive in a responsible and permanent home.

For every dog who lives indoors with a family and receives the love they deserve, there are literally thousands who will never feel the warmth of a family home and live hard lives on the street before dying brutal deaths. We can’t think of a crueler punishment for these social pack animals who want—and deserve—companionship, scratches behind the ears, walks around the block, and the opportunity to curl up at their guardians’ feet at night indoors.

And for some dogs that do find a home, very often they are abused by neglectful owners. Chained up, totally vulnerable to other animals and cruel people, and many likely to be stolen, set on fire, shot, stabbed, tortured, or poisoned by cruel passersby or neighbors who become annoyed by their barking. Under no circumstances should our four-legged friends suffer such a fate. All dogs deserve the love and attention of a good owner in a safe and friendly environment.
