In Defence of Cats

Of all the species on earth that have been domesticated, cats have been subjected to the widest and cruelest of treatments by humans.

Cruelty to cats, in its many forms, is a serious problem that dramatically affects many animals and the people who care about them. It also should raise concerns about perpetrators’ potential for other acts of abuse and neglect that might affect other human and nonhuman victims. Professionals in veterinary medicine, animal behavior, and animal protection, as well as concerned individuals, can take several steps to focus greater attention on this problem.

The shocking numbers of cruelty towards cats reported every day is just the tip of the iceberg—most cases are never reported. Unlike violent crimes against people, cases of abuse towards animals and cats specifically go unreported, making it difficult to calculate just how common they are. How often have you personally witnessed cruelty towards our little feline friends? A lot, I bet.

In wales alone, The RSPCA revealed that they received 1,557 calls coming through to their cruelty line in Gwent last year with concerns for the welfare of cats.

How often do you see homeless cats roaming the dark streets all alone at night, their little bellies empty? Far too often, I am guessing.

Cats and kittens being abandoned, cats having unplanned and unwanted pregnancies due to a lack of neutering and multi-cat households where breeding has sadly become out of control; these are just many of the appalling problems confronting Cats today.
